It is with heavy hearts that we share that the iconic Top O Rock in Charleston, Kanawha County, was demolished today. It was constructed in 1968 by the late architect, Henry Elden. Local company, Rodney Loftis & Sons, was hired to tear down the structure. In 2014, the home had been the location of many break-ins and was a hot spot for locals. A local nonprofit, WV GreenWorks tried tirelessly to save the structure and find a new use for it. It initiated a design competition to encourage the investment and re-use of the structure, and it unsuccessfully worked to fundraise the money to purchase it from the owners. Unfortunately, we received word today that the owners decided to demolish. There is no word about future plans for the site.
